UGA: Where were you born ?

RH: Near Nijmegen in the south of The Netherlands.

UGA: When did you first start playing music ?

RH: At 12.

UGA: How did you become interested in music ?

RH: A Moroccan friend of mine was playing piano and sang in a church choir, I had taken some basic guitar lessons. He proposed to start a band. I wanted to be David Bowie.

UGA: What was the music scene like in the Netherlands when you were growing up ?

RH: Very eighties: Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet stuff, but also Prince, Cameo and The Cure.

UGA: Who are some of your musical influences ?

RH: Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Talking Heads, Stereo MC's, David Bowie, Paul Weller, Reef.

UGA: Where is the bands base of operations ?

RH: Amsterdam and Nijmegen, The Netherlands…

UGA: How did the band get started ?

RH: Mark (the bass player) and Ralf together with a rhythm box.

UGA: How did you come to name the band Lemon ?

RH: After many discussions between the band members. Everyone put names on little sheets of paper and about all didn't make it. Lemon was a name that provided the freedom to go wherever we liked (unlike names like Metallica or Funkadelic which are very much attached to a music style) and had a nice twist.

UGA: Who are the members of the band ?

RH: Guus Leideritz - percussion, Jeroen Weerts - Roland 505 Groovebox and guitars, Mark Bonger - Bass, Paul Hesen - Drums and vocals, Ralf Hesen - Guitars and lead vocals.

UGA: What are some of the more memorable venues that you have played ?

RH: De Melkweg, 013, Doornroosje, T'ofPop Festival, Access to Amsterdam Festival…

UGA: What is the club scene like in the Netherlands ?

RH: Not so great for bands. It's all DJ's and dance…

UGA: Your first album “Wallpaper” , when was that recorded ?

RH: 2000.

UGA: What type of recording facility did you utilize in recording Wallpaper ?

RH: Starsound Studios, 24-track analog tapes.

UGA: What instruments/manufacturers does the band use ?

RH: Gretch Jet guitars, VOX AC30 amp, Fender Jazz Bass, Pearl drum kit, Roland 505 Groovebox, Afro Percussion, Mesa Boogie Bass Amp.

UGA: How would you describe the bands music ?

RH: Manchesterish groovy rock music.

UGA: What type of lyrical content do you gravitate to in general ?

RH: It's about life, about wrong and right, about trying to understand...

UGA: Who is the lead singer ?

RH: Ralf.

UGA: What’s it like having your brother in the band ?

RH: Well…, you can argue quite a lot without the risk of a break up The good thing is our voices match naturally.

UGA: What bands if any , would you compare your music to ?

RH: People say: "a bit like Kula Shaker or Talking Heads". I'd like to say Stone Roses.

UGA: What are some of your favorite cuts from the album ?

RH: Deep Inside and Quite a Trip.

UGA: What is the bands upcoming agenda in 2004 ?

RH: See our web site for gig dates, a nice one that is coming up is the Polderpop festival.

UGA: What is your next album project titled & when will it be released ?

RH: "About time", hopefully it will be released before the end of this summer.
